Lancaster County Celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month Proclamation Group Photo 2024

On Wednesday, February 7th, the Lancaster County Commissioners were joined by  the NAACP, Lancaster County Branch and community leaders to recognize Black History Month. Lancaster County played a significant role in African American history and the cause of freedom for all people including the underground railroad, and the “Christiana Riot” or “Christiana Resistance,” which some consider to be the unofficial first battle of the civil war, where armed citizens of Lancaster County defended their neighbors from southerners seeking to recapture them.

Lancaster County residents are encouraged to learn more about Lancaster's role in fighting for freedom and the American Dream for all and the many prominent Black citizens who called Lancaster County home by learning our history through lancasterhistory.org and other local resources and organizations.
