When Seconds Count, Know What to Do!
9-1-1 is your lifeline in emergencies, connecting you to the critical help you need from police, fire, and medical services. This page is designed to empower you with essential knowledge about when and how to call 9-1-1, ensuring the fastest and most effective response when every second matters.
What is 9-1-1?
9-1-1 is the universal emergency number in the United States and many parts of the world. It’s a direct connection to trained professionals who coordinate emergency responses for life-threatening situations, crimes in progress, or other urgent incidents.
When Should You Call 9-1-1?
Call 9-1-1 in situations such as:
- Medical emergencies like chest pain, severe injuries, or unconsciousness
- Fires, gas leaks, or explosions
- Crimes in progress, such as theft, violence, or suspicious activities
- Traffic accidents requiring police, fire, or medical assistance
Tip: If you're unsure whether it’s an emergency, it’s better to call 9-1-1 and let the dispatcher assess the situation.
How to Call 9-1-1
- Stay calm and speak clearly.
- Provide your location and call-back number immediately. If you don’t know the address, give landmarks or cross streets.
- Describe the nature of the emergency.
- Follow the dispatcher’s instructions carefully.
- Stay on the line until told to hang up.
Important Information to Remember
- Know Your Location: Mobile phones don’t always provide precise location data. Tell us your township, borough, or city if you can. Several areas across the county share commons street names (example - Main Street).
- Stay Available: Keep your phone line clear for follow-up questions.
- Teach Kids: Ensure children know how to dial 9-1-1 and understand what it’s for.
When Not to Call 9-1-1
Avoid calling 9-1-1 for non-emergencies like utility outages, road conditions, or general information. Instead, use local non-emergency numbers or online resources for assistance.
Enhancing Public Safety Together
Your understanding of 9-1-1 services plays a vital role in public safety. By using the system responsibly, you ensure emergency responders can focus on those in critical need.
